“Consumers are paying too much for dental services”, says Bill Prasifka, Chairperson of the Competition Authority. The report highlights 26 areas which have a negative effect on consumer value. A core problem is the current set of rules governing dentists that prevent advertising of dental practices and their prices. These rules were created with good intent – allowing Dentist’s to charge according to their duty to care and preventing price fixing across the sector, the  effect has been anti-competitive with dental prices rising 171% over 19 years, over the same period the CPI (consumer price index) rose by only 69%.
